The narrow Rue Gnénégaud, just off the river, is one to savour slowly. Thankfully, most of the galleries and one-of-akind shops have been there almost as long as The French Mint, now revamped with interesting exhibitions and gift shop. The moment your feet hit the lobby's parquet floor, the Prince de Conti (the Princess lived here in 1670) feels just as authentic. the choice is eclectic but it works: a comfy sofa fits perfectly in the bay window, a ceramic stove sits next to one of the chinoiserie bamboo chairs and a lovely bronze figure in movement watches all from its three-legged pedestal. If you are splurging and want a view, ask for the suite on the top floor with its antique desk, checked armchairs and double-basin bathroom; another interesting choice, in the summer months, would be one of the ground-level rooms with French windows that open onto the interior courtyard.
