La Banastière, on the outskirts of Avignon, was built in 1711 by a wicker basket producer (banaste meaning wicker basket in the 18th century.) There were a lot of factories at that time in Provence due to the fact that the markets, and notably those in Avignon, had become increasingly popular with the arrival of the Popes who designated Avignon as the capital of Western medieval culture in the 15th century. Nowadays, La Banastière has become a charming guesthouse, bed and brakfast, renovated with taste and a love of Provence.
